1. PURPOSE AND SCOPE

PURPOSE:

a.  To provide proper information and instructions to ship’s crew and to help them acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to handle fire emergency cases on board.
Upon joining a vessel, every crew member will receive instructions as to his assigned duties in case of emergency, Ship’s Safety Officer will provide demonstration to him regarding operation and use of onboard fire fighting appliances.

b.  To maintain onboard fire protection systems, fire fighting systems and appliances to be maintained in good working order at all times, so that they can be put to immediate and effective use in case of fire.

SCOPE:

This training manual explains the following in detail.

a.  General fire safety practice and precautions related to the dangers of common shipboard hazards.

b.  General instructions on fire fighting activities and procedures for notification of a fire and use of manually operated call points.

c.  Meaning of the ship’s alarms.

d. Operation and use of ship specific fire fighting systems and appliances.

e. Operation and use of shipboard fire doors.

f. Operation and use of shipboard fire and smoke dampers.

g. Shipboard escape systems and appliances.

Onboard fire protection systems, fire fighting systems and appliances shall be inspected and tested periodically as detailed in Amos PMS.


Please bear in mind that fire may be purely accidental and caused by circumstances beyond control but it can also be caused by carelessness and irresponsible actions of shipboard staff.

No matter how a fire starts, it could well result in loss of lives and also loss of vessel and its cargo.
